i was talking about the 2008 election with a czech woman and one british man at the brussels energy conference.
british guy: i think obama's a good candidate, he's a senator so he has a lot of experience
me: well actually, it's his first term so that's considered a strike
==blank faces==
me: oh, i guess that's more american english. like in baseball...the whole sentence should have been "that's considered a strike against him."
british guy: yes, 'three strikes and you're out,' right?
me: hahaha yes!
czech woman: i guess obama wants a...(pronounces slowly) home run.
hahaha. and so he does. i've been noticing how many of our expressions come from baseball (curveball, "out of my league," ballpark, right off the bat). it's easy to work around most of them, but 'curveball' is pretty hard to drop from my vocabulary.
