two times when acquaintences invited me to go out with them and their friends, they both made a point of giving me this explanation of how they checked with other people and that it was 'ok' that i was coming.
the first time this happened i felt surprised and , but the second time this happened i realized that it must be some different concept of politeness - like making sure the invitee knows that everything is ok and its clear that the person is 'truly' welcome. i verified this with my inviter =)
this doesnt happen evey time of coz, but often enough that you need to learn to get used to it i guess.
by the way, i am in brussels for an energy conference. i have been taking pictures with my camera and will post a proper entry when i get back. the only thing that is decidedly weird about this place is the keyboards. for the "number strip" on top of the [different] letter arrangement, instead of the numbers being the default, you have to hit the shift key. :-(
