gedaechtnis kirche (memorial church). most of the church was blown away during wwii. today it's kept as a memorial church - the "memorial" part seemed to be about wwii, but inside guided tours talk about the beautiful murals from the late 1800's when it was built, and pictures show the church from the days of kaiser wilhelm through today.

one of our good friends is named lucia. it took like eighty tries to get the name and the two of us in the picture, lol.
it's located near this area (zoologischer garten) which is posh if you get about 15-20 minutes away from the train station itself. it's also close to a ritzy shopping district (kurfuerstendamm), and probably lots of tourists, so the atmosphere is well-lighted, busy with rich old german ladies, and cozy (...and even cozier on the proletariet end of the street with the h&m).
memorial for the murdered jews of europe. the grey structures here are more square slabs of stone in the beginning which get bigger unevenly but gradually until you're in the middle. the walkways are rolling and are not all flat like in the picture. i think the middle is supposed to portray a feeling of desolation and emptyness. the space is bleak and simple enough that once you get to the middle you start to wonder how you're supposed to get out, which is probably an allusion to the long (and seemingly endless) history of jewish persecution. it's also something you can't look at (like from the outskirts of the memorial, which is how i had seen it before), it's something to experience and understand - which i thought was the most political statement of the monument.

the american monopoly is named from streets in atlantic city, new jersey and boardwalk is the most expensive street, followed by "park place." lol i should go to atlantic city sometime bc i probably know all the streets now.
Why Atlantic City????
was it invented there?
or is it like 'let's pick a random US city for our game and use the streets of that city....?
