a reminder that germany isn't so far away...in spirit and product

a nice surprise this morning! i see a massive ZEITGEIST on the side of a bus, and see that it's part of an ad to travel to germany. i guess americans must like german words, because they seem to be used in advertisements for german things a lot. apparently there's also a contest to take pictures of said bus so i guess i will be competing with fellow germanophiles for an ipod very soon.



i walk into a 'corner store' (it is a small store for small food items on the corner, but it's not in a residential area so it doesn't have the homey feel i associate with that title). and the first thing i see? HARIBO! no surprise since haribo is everywhere, but it was just a nice part of my exceptionally german-filled day.



yogi tea, my favorite overpriced herbal tea. an american brand, but one i discovered in germany. it was not the first time i'd seen it, but i was surprised to see high-end tea in a "corner store" that had mostly candy bars.



later i am waiting (where the red dot is) at the local subway stop so we can carpool home together. but i arrive early and my dad was delayed, so i ended up waiting for a while. in order to kill time, i call my roommates from berlin. i lived in two apartments, on different floors of the same building, and luckily the one i called was having a party and had invited the others! i also was lucky because the party was a goodbye party - one of my roommates will be moving to southern germany for two months, so i caught her just in time. it was really energizing to talk to them, especially the one who is a social butterfly and tough to catch.



the final surprise? before my father left work he had spent some time talking to a friend who likes german bread and wanted to share a slice - and so tomorrow morning for breakfast i'll be able to have vollkornbrot.

germany has been so far away since i left. but then today i have an avalanche of german things/people. as always, when it rains, it pours...
