me wearing a sari

in india, an outfit is considered incomplete if you are not wearing earrings, a necklace, and bangles. preferably gold for the first two, the bangles can be from glass (this way they are colorful and klinky).


the sari was given to me at the wedding i attended (see two posts below). in most places, a sari is six yards, but in some states it is nine yards (!). different regions have different ways of tying saris - the most standard way is what you see here, where it drapes from front to back, but in some places they tie it so that it drapes from back to front. the differences get much more fine tuned than that, but i think then those differences are very regionalized so i have not seen (or also probable, have not noticed) them.

my grandmother kept telling me it was the job of every married indian woman to always wear saris, but then when i pointed out all my aunts (except for my eldest) still wear salvaar kameezes, she was not too responsive. :-/ i think it is a generational thing.
