the grass is greener

i had a job offer from an organization recently here in berlin. on paper, it was really ideal - i'd make contacts in the field of international relations, it was well-paid (for berlin, for an internship), i'd learn how to organize events for big-wigs, if the boss liked me, i'd have good exit options.

but when i spoke to the people who were actually working there, they were more or less miserable. the boss' personal assistant was there until 9pm often times, the boss would gossip about employees behind their backs (and insult them to their face), the responsibilities were very slow (so even if i put in one year i will have only had an internship and not really have done much), and there was "always one" unlucky chap who would be blamed for everything (since there would be two new entering people, then i would have had a 50/50 chance of being the 'hated one').

ultimately, i "abgesagted" (translation of denglish: declined) the job offer. ultimately, the pros were things that i could have had in other places, but the cons were things that were specific to this job. and it wasn't just one employee that warned me, but all of them - a red flag if i ever saw one. but now that i've turned it down, i feel like i should have said yes.

but had i accepted, i would have wondered what sort of situation i'd locked myself into, and if i should have said no.

i wish i could just say "that ship has sailed" and move on.

As I said, do not look back. The ship has sailed!! I am sure there are/will be much better opportunities. Cheers

Sounds like the right call; something better will come along.

I read that article - some of the advice was good, a lot was questionable. Trumpeting Vandy over Cornell when all else is equal is sheer lunacy. . .
